HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Trust Top Hat Chimney for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?

HeatShield is a specific material with a specific chemistry. It is not paint. Wendell Pike and his crew have applied, repaired, and correctly maintained HeatShield Cerfractory coatings across Quincy since long before most national outfits even carried the product line. We know how it sets, how it bonds to clay tile versus granite, and what happens when someone skips the surface prep. Wendell picked up the trade at Southwestern College down in Chula Vista, where a good instructor drilled into him that honest work done carefully beats a fast hustle. He has carried that into every Quincy chimney he has climbed since. When we open a HeatShield flue, we know what a proper two-coat Cerfractory application should look like, where it typically fails first, and what the freeze-thaw cycles on Quincy’s triple-deckers do to the joint lines. As an independent HeatShield service provider, we are not bound to push the product. We recommend it when it fits, and we tell you straight when a stainless liner is the better fix.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Quincy

HeatShield is a good product applied correctly. The problem is that a lot of what we see in Quincy was not applied correctly, or it has simply aged out. Here are the real failure modes we find, week after week.

  • Opened clay tile joints behind old Cerfractory. Decades of New England freeze-thaw working on Quincy’s clay-tile flues cause the mortar joints between tiles to crack and separate. HeatShield was designed to seal those joints, but when the underlying tile shifts again, the coating can’t hold it together. We regularly find gaps behind Cerfractory that were invisible from the roofline. Last month our tech pulled a HeatShield Cerfractory flue in a 1960s split-level off Quincy Shore Drive where the homeowner bought the house with a “certified” coating from a flip. The clay joints had opened in two places, 8 and 14 feet down. Not visible from the top. We ran our inspection camera, found the gaps, removed the loose material, and reapplied the HeatShield joint repair system plus a fresh Cerfractory coat. The client’s smoke smell was gone that night.
  • Peeling or cracked coats from bad surface prep. Cerfractory bonds to a clean, rough surface. If soot or creosote is left behind before application, the coat will peel within a season or two. We see this constantly on DIY jobs and handyman-applied HeatShield work in Quincy’s older capes and ranches. The fix is not always a full redo. Sometimes we can remove the loose sections and patch. Sometimes the whole flue needs a strip and fresh two-coat application.
  • Gaps behind the ceramic coating where spalled brick lets hot gases into the chase. This is the dangerous one. When the underlying masonry is spalling, or the mortar between granite blocks has turned to sand, the Cerfractory layer can sit over a void. Hot gases find their way behind it. We spot this with our camera during cleaning. If the flue is structurally compromised, HeatShield is not the answer. We will tell you.
  • HeatShield Cerfractory failing at the smoke shelf or damper area. The smoke shelf is a tricky spot. It collects debris, gets coated unevenly, and sits right where the damper frame puts stress on surrounding masonry. Original masonry movement in Quincy’s older triple-deckers often cracks the coating right at this transition point. We inspect the smoke shelf and damper area carefully on every HeatShield job.
  • HeatShield installed where it should not have been. Sometimes a previous owner was sold Cerfractory as a standalone fix for an unlined or severely oversized flue. Cerfractory is a thin coating. It seals joints and smooths the surface. It does not create a new structural liner. When we find HeatShield applied to a flue that was never a candidate in the first place, we explain the honest options and let you decide.

HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We use genuine HeatShield Cerfractory material and the manufacturer’s foam applicator system for every resurfacing job. No aftermarket substitutes. The chemistry and expansion rate of the material matter for a lasting bond, and we are not going to experiment on your chimney. We stock the standard HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant two-coat system, the Joint Repair System for clay tile liner joints, and the Resurfacing System for full flue relining. We also work with HeatShield CeCure Sleeve Relining when a clay liner has failed at the joints but is otherwise sound. Our repair-versus-replace decision goes like this. If the flue structure is sound and the issue is joint sealing or surface smoothing, HeatShield is a good fix. If the masonry itself is spalling, the flue is offset beyond the Cerfractory spec, or the tiles are collapsed, we will tell you straight that a full stainless liner or a rebuild is the honest answer. We would rather lose a coating job than install one that fails. Call (781) 277-4630 and we will give you a no-hassle price before a single tool comes off the truck.

Our HeatShield Service Process - Step by Step

  1. 1
Camera inspection, top to bottom. Before any cleaning or coating, we run our inspection camera through the flue. You see what we see. We look for open joints, spalled brick, creosote glaze, and previous HeatShield failures. In Quincy’s older granite-block chimneys, we pay special attention to lime-mortar joints that erode differently than brick.
  2. 2
Cleaning and surface prep. Glazed creosote must come off before any HeatShield material goes on. Cerfractory will not bond to soot. We clean the flue thoroughly, remove loose material, and rough the surface so the coating has something to grab. This is the step amateurs skip, and it is why their coats peel.
  3. 3
HeatShield repair or resurfacing. Depending on what the camera showed, we apply the Joint Repair System to open clay tile seams, then follow with the Cerfractory two-coat sealant or foam-applied Resurfacing System. We use the manufacturer’s applicator, not a hand trowel. The foam application is the only way to get even coverage in a flue you cannot reach.
  4. 4
Post-application camera verification. We run the camera again after the coat cures enough to inspect. You see the finished surface. We point out what changed and what we will watch at the next cleaning. No mystery. The camera footage and a plain-English verdict, every time, no exceptions.

HeatShield Products We Service & Install in Quincy

We work with the full HeatShield line that applies to residential chimneys in Quincy. That includes the standard Cerfractory Flue Sealant two-coat system, the Joint Repair System for clay tile liner joints, the foam-applied Resurfacing System for full flue relining, and the CeCure Sleeve Relining system for clay liner joint failures. Most of what we install in Quincy is the Joint Repair plus Cerfractory combination on older triple-deckers and post-war capes. We also handle our Chimney Cleaning & Sweep services and chimney waterproofing as part of the full HeatShield service, because a good coating does no good if the masonry is still absorbing water from Quincy’s coastal air.

We Also Service These Brands

HeatShield is not the only product we trust. We install and service DuraFlex stainless liners and Gelco chimney caps across Quincy and the South Shore, and we also offer Milton Heatshield service. Some chimneys need a liner, not a coating. DuraFlex is our go-to for full stainless relining when HeatShield is not the right fit. Gelco caps handle the salt-air corrosion we see in Squantum and Wollaston better than most.
