• Rust flakes or metallic bits in the firebox. A stainless liner should not shed. If you’re seeing flakes, the inner wall is oxidizing from condensation, and that means the liner has already lost its seal.
• Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney chase. Liner failure lets flue gas condense inside the chase, and that moisture soaks into drywall and framing. By the time the stain shows, the leak has been there a while.
• A smell like burnt metal or old ash even when the fireplace is cold. That odor is flue gas working its way into the house through pinholes or a separated seam. It gets worse on humid days.
• White or brown crust on the outside of the chimney crown. This is efflorescence from flue condensation pushing through the masonry. The liner is not containing the moisture anymore.
