How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Famco makes solid caps, but every product line has its weak points. Here’s what we actually find on Quincy roofs.

• Wind-bent mesh on older 4-inch and 5-inch single-flue caps. Quincy sits open to the harbor and the northeast winds that come with it. Older Famco single-flue caps with standard galvanized mesh screens bend inward after a few hard winters. The mesh then traps creosote and debris instead of keeping it out. We see this most on cap models without the reinforced cross-bracing. The fix is usually a replacement cap with heavier mesh, not a repair, and we stock the common Famco sizes in the truck.
• Corrosion at the base ring on multi-flue Famco caps. The base where the cap meets the flue tile takes the brunt of acidic flue gases and Quincy’s salt air. On multi-flue Famco caps, especially the galvanized versions, that base ring starts to rust through before the rest of the cap shows wear. You’ll see rust streaks running down the outside of the flue tile. That’s the tell. • Loose mounting hardware on Famco caps installed with friction-fit collars. Some Famco caps use a clamp-and-screw collar instead of a direct-tap into the flue tile. We find this on a lot of the Famco Economy series caps that were installed as quick fixes. We repair the crown with a polymer sealant and, when needed, recast the surface with a proper slope away from the flue so water doesn’t sit there again.
