Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two main lines we see in Quincy homes: the top-sealing Energy Saver damper and the throat-mount Cast Iron replacement damper. The Energy Saver sits at the top of the flue and uses a stainless steel cable that runs down to a bracket on the fireplace wall. The throat-mount version drops into the existing damper frame just above the firebox. Most Quincy calls are for the Energy Saver line, because the cable and spring mechanism takes more abuse from New England weather than the interior throat models.

To identify your part, look for the Gelco name stamped on the lever or bracket inside the firebox. If it’s gone, measure the damper opening, the cable length, and the mounting pattern. This matters because Gelco changed cable housing diameters between the early 2000s models and the current production run. A 3/8-inch cable housing won’t fit a bracket drilled for 5/16-inch. Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The cable has gone slack. When you push or pull the lever, there’s no resistance and nothing moves at the top. The cable either snapped or pulled free from the damper plate. This is the most common failure we see, usually from years of thermal cycling.
• Cold air drops into the room even when the damper is closed. The silicone gasket around the damper plate has hardened or cracked. Quincy winters are hard on that gasket, especially in homes near the water where salt air adds corrosion on top of the freeze-thaw cycle.
• Smoke rolls back into the room when you light a fire. The damper plate isn’t opening fully. Either the cable is binding inside the housing, or the plate is hanging up on debris or a warped frame.
• The lever fights you. If it takes real muscle to move the handle, the cable is corroded inside the housing or the spring at the top has weakened. Forcing it usually makes things worse.
• You hear metal scraping when the damper moves. The damper plate is out of alignment and grinding against the flue tile or the frame. Left alone, it will chew up the gasket and then the plate itself.
